New
York Fashion Week ended last Friday with
celebrities, models and designers packing
the traditional white Bryant Park tents
trying to catch a glimpse of the latest
in Spring 2007 fashions.
Everyone from Marc
Jacobs, Anna Sui, Carolina
Herrera, Alice Temperley and Michael
Kors showed their latest looks
for the season. The most prominent features
that may be big trends for the upcoming
spring season is very bright spring colors,
simplicity, volume and drapery.
Designers sent their models down the runways
showing off mile-high shorts, loose flowing
dresses, bell sleeves, scarves and skinny
jeans with a very high waistline.
Huge sunglasses and Grecian sandals are
some of the trends displayed during the
week. All runway looks during New York Fashion
Week are designed to be Ready-To-Wear, RTW,
which means anyone can take a look off a
model exactly "as is", put on by the customer,
and worn on the streets.
Couture shows are different. Couture are
one of a kind pieces hand-stitched or made
with exquisite and rare fabrics and jewels.
Any ordinary person cannot take the look
off the runway to wear or even afford. These
dresses cost about the price of a car and
house put together.
But, despite how many looks one may see
on the runway, it can be hard to translate
that look into everyday life.
Think for example your favorite runway look.
One of my favorites is London-based designer
Alice Temperley. She mixes British flair
with minimalist styling. Runway looks are
easily adapted into any real-life wardrobe.
Then, there are looks from Marc Jacobs and
those cannot be worn directly off the runway
even though they are ready-to-wear.
What I am trying to say is that runway looks
should be adapted to your taste and area
because some looks would not necessarily
be appropriate for Opelousas.
During Fall '06, fur was a big trend down
the runway. But, here in Opelousas fur is
not necessarily appropriate because of the
hot weather.
Marc Jacobs sent envelope/balloon pants
down the runway. In my opinion, this is
another look that would not look so good
taken to the streets.
Not only were these pants MC Hammer's signature
in the early 90s, but it would not look
so hot on my 5'1 frame.
So, when fashion editors and designers pack
the Bryant Park tents again next season
to decide on what's the "next big thing."
Just remember, it is you, the customer,
who decides upon how to wear the trends
because ultimately you are the one buying
the clothes.
Instead of being a standard clotheshanger
for designer clothes, find the runway looks
that you like and harmoniously merge it
into your wardrobe.
